Your favourite sports stars when you were younger?

Don't watch as much sport these days (certainly not right now!) but as a kid or younger adult I watched an incredible amount on either Grandstand, World of Sport or Sportsnight, and as all youngsters do had my heroes in the sports I did watch, not all of them English! Who were yours?

Dan, true but apart from 2012 athletics does not seem to hold the interest in the general public it once did in the 80s and 90s. Maybe that is simply sue to the fact that we are not that good at it now.

Events were always BIG when the UK had a decent chance of winning them. Triple jump, javelin, women's 400m hurdles and decathlon are covered to a greater or lesser extent at meets now but the nation would shut down to watch them at various times over the last 30 years.
I'm not sure any other nation cared about the mile race back then. It was just us with moist eyes reminiscing about Roger Bannister and the one remaining imperial measurement in athletics.

Tom Mckean always seemed to disappoint on the big stage burns. I remember dashing home one to see him compete in the 800 final at possibly the Worlds. He was the favourite and /I was gutted as he finished well down the field and if I recall rightly Billy Koncellah won. Hard/impossible to imagine those days when we always seemed to have someone either winning or thereabouts in every middle distance race. Peter Elliott was useful but Crammie was my favourite. I can still remember watching the 'Dream Mile' when he broke the World Record. It was big big news at the time and back page stuff.

I used to like Graff as a tennis player too, willing her on against Martina. Gabriella Sabatini was easy on the eye and must be one of the best looking Lesbians in History!
